COT When Cats Go Green

Target started eating grass last week which got me worried. He'd been chasing a lizard and I thought he might have an upset tummy or even salmonella as all lizards carry those germs in and on their bodies.

Later on Target threw up quietly in the ferns, and Au joined him for good measure. Now they are both fine again.

This Saturday Katz Tales will be published in the print version of the Malaysian national daily The Star, Weekend section. It's all about why cats eat grass. Check it out!

Also, if you are living in Selangor (or travel there) and are looking to adopt a kitty, consider little Byron here pictured left.

Byron was found wandering near some food stalls. He was barely more than skin and bones but this 4 month old kitten has come a long way. Today he is an affectionate, cuddly, playful and active cat with a hearty appetite. A severe flu during his street cat days damaged his nasal passages so his breathing sometimes sound like gentle snoring - quite cute!

If you want to adopt Byron, contact Alicia at http://petepicure.wordpress.com. She's one of Malaysia's independent pet rescuers and her blog is well worth a visit.

COT Cat Cute

Target is posing nicely these days. He's tucking in his paws, facing the camera, holding still while I fiddle with angles and all that. But Target is so happy that he keeps purring and squeezing his eyes at me in little cat kisses. So that open-eyed look that would make him a real photo star is still lacking. even so, cute cat, no?

If you haven't heard of this before, please do check out how Friends Furry Farm, TV Smith and their associates are rescuing the 300 stray dogs dumped on Pulau Ketam (Ketam Island). The latest news is here. To donate or help, e-mail TV Smith at tvsmith@mycen.com.my or Sabrina Yeap at yeapwen@yahoo.com.

How To Stop Your Dog Barking

This bit was left out of Dog Talk published today in Weekender, the Star Malaysia:

How To Stop Your Dog Barking
You need: one dog treat and one barking dog.
Method: When your dog barks, say, “quiet” in a calm voice and hold up the treat by the dog’s nose. Your dog will automatically stop barking because of the treat. The second he or she stops barking, praise and pet. Count to three and give the reward.
Repeat next time but praise during 5 seconds of silence before giving treat.
Gently increase the time between the command “quiet” and the treat. Eventually you can replace the treat entirely with praise.

Also, please note that Lisa Kuok is holding an event "In aid of Furry Friends Farm and the rescue of the Pulau Ketam dogs" on Sunday, May 17 at 12:30pm.

Event: In aid of Furry Friends Farm and the rescue of the Pulau Ketam dogs "Putting your money where your mouth is - for a good cause."
What: Fundraiser
Host: Lisa Kuok
Start Time: Sunday, May 17 at 12:30pm
End Time: Sunday, May 17 at 2:30pm
Where: Sri Nyonya Restaurant, 14 Jalan 22/49, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

The menu looks absolutely yummy!

COT and more awards

It's a lousy picture in so many ways with all the light bouncing off the floor and off Au's green eyes but I do like this pic because Au is so incredibly relaxed and happy looking. This was him yesterday, hanging out under the coffee table after having a quiet day's snoozing, playing games and hanging out with his pal Target and his best human Tom. Au was in such a good mood that even I got cuddles and purrs.

*apologies* I forgot that Anya and Kareltje sent us the World's Best Cat Mom award three weeks ago! Sorry, got all tangled up in work. It makes me very proud to be mum to Target. But I think I'm more slave to Au than mum. At least, that's how he sees it!

I'd like to send this on to Ee Lynn of Covert Operations who rescues cats, dogs, and everything else on paws or claws in Malaysia and the Creek Cats as they are all rescued fluffs living in the USA.

Also, we got another award from Ailurophile who writes those great weekly news roundups about cats and their big cousins the tigers, lion, jaguars etc around the world.

The 'Works of Heart' Award was designed by Yesterday's Glitter and her original post is here. The rule is that the award is for, "...people who put their heart and soul into their work, their words and/or their kindness to others." Each recipient is supposed to pass it on to 2 people. I'm passing it along to Ariel who always has something to say (usually while being beautifully accessorised) and to Elin who wears no accessories at all.

Action: Pulau Ketam abandoned dogs

Update: This rescue mission is now closed. Thanks!

I received this message from Meem yesterday. If you're in Malaysia, or have some money in a Paypal account, please consider helping these furfriends. Meem is a personal friend and 100% trustworthy when it comes to cash and doing the best thing for the pets involved. So is her associate Sabrina who runs Friends Furry Farm, a rescue centre for dogs. Please read on...

About 300 stray dogs were rounded up by Pulau Ketam residents in Malaysia and deported to an isolated island to fend for themselves.

Over half of them are already dead and the remaining ones may not live long. A rescue mission is being mounted and your help is needed.

The residents of Pulau Ketam sent some 300 stray dogs to exile on a remote island where the harsh conditions almost certainly guarantee a horrible death. Of the 300 dogs sent there, more than three-quarters are presumed to be already dead. I traveled to the island with Sabrina Yeap of Furry Friends Farm and managed to save only one dog on this reconnaissance trip. We did see several other starving and dying dogs along the mangrove shore.

I am mounting an urgent rescue mission to capture and transport the remaining survivors back to Sabrina's Furry Friends Farm animal shelter. But time is running out and there might be only skeletons and carcasses left to collect on our next trip. Boat hire is expensive there. It is a tourist area and it has already cost me a few hundred ringgit for boat hire alone, so far. The rescued dogs cannot be transported on the regular ferries.

Almost nobody will lift a finger to help without a fee. This is understandable. The locals are already shaking their heads in disbelief that there are outsiders who want to save the animals they so casually discarded. Instead of pointing fingers and antagonising them, we need their co-operation to help save the unfortunate creatures. In the process, we also hope to educate the islanders on better treatment of animals. It would be an impossible mission if we didn't win their hearts.

If you are unable to help directly, please help by forwarding this appeal to other compassionate folks who you feel might be able to make some monetary contributions.
Apart from boat hire, we need money to buy cages, to pay people to help catch them, to hire land transport to send the rescued animals to veterinary clinics, pay for vet fees, send the recovered ones to the shelter and to feed and house them for life. I can go on!

To donate or help, e-mail TV Smith at tvsmith@mycen.com.my or Sabrina Yeap at yeapwen@yahoo.com.

COT Toes and Blogs

I was trying to take a nice picture of Target yesterday but he wasn't cooperating.

First he shoved his nose into the lens,

Then he grabbed the lens cover,

And I ended up just taking a picture of his toes...

Anyway, Anya and Kareltje invited us to join the International Bloggist Community! There's a logo and a meme that calls for 4 other members.

I'm listing:
