Au Speaks Out: An Impawtunt New Year Message

it's new year, a time when de survunts are apt to get squiffy.   Some katz get upset abowt dis but not me.  de reason is simple:

some of dis leads to more of dis!

when de survunts get squiffy, a sensibul kat waits until dey go into the kitshun for ice, and den asks for treats.

you can do dis as often as you like bekos squiffy survunts don't understand time furry well. and if de survunt says, "Au meow you just had a treat" you just say "meow meow, dat wasn't me, dat was Target" and de survunt will believe you.

so remember: a squiffy survunt is a generus survunt!

also, make sure you keep your tayul tucked away safely because a squiffy survunt is also a clumsy survunt...

my eyes say GIF ME A TREAT!
me and Target and Guido wish you all a purry furry happy treatfilled new year!

This Can't Be The Real Meaning Of Boxing Day!

Everyone celebrates Boxing Day differently, but we bet few people do what we did.  This morning we boxed Guido up - and took him to the vet.
HELP!  This can't be what Boxing Day is about!!!

Guido was examined and then given his 5-in-1 vaccination.  He enjoyed the ear rubbing (looking for mites) and the tummy rubs (checking organ functions) and he didn't even feel the injection thanks to Dr Vijay's stealthy practice of rubbing ears at the front while sticking a needle in the bum, but all the same, Guido was glad to get out of there.

Get off me!
Target gave Guido a hero's welcome.
"Oh my Cod!  Are you ok?" Target asks.
We are having roast pork for lunch, and Guido will have his own share.  Happy Boxing Day!

If you're looking for a good read, check out Logomania: Fate and Fortune that delves into the meaning and history of over 250 phrases.

The Most Expensive Tuxie Cat On The Street

This is the paw AFTER it was stitched!
About 5 weeks ago my neighbour Jamal managed to pick up and box up a stray tuxie cat who has been haunting our street for some months.

I'd volunteered to have him neutered, but when I saw him up close, I realised his front left paw was in a really bad state.

I took the tuxie cat to the vet, we gave him a huge shot of antibiotics, and then left him to starve overnight.  The next day, I went back, held him while he was given his knock-out shot, and we took a look at the damage.

I thought he'd been in an accident but the vet, our Dr Baz in SS14 Subang Jaya, says the damage was done by a knife.  And there was more than one cut.  Poor tuxie cat needed a serious operation and ended up with a dozen stitches.

Since that day he's been in Zaa's place, our local aquarium shop cum cat rescue centre in SS15/5A number 43.  He sits in his cage and eats and sleeps and heals and eats and sleeps and heals.  The tuxie cat is healing really fast but as the knife cuts were down to the bone, and it's on his elbow, it's taking a while.

Thank heavens the vet and Zaa give us a discount.  Even so, it's costing a bomb but it's worth it.  The tuxie cat has gone from a scared feral cat to a big purry fuzzy face.  That's Zaa's work.  And the fact that he's alive and not dying slowly and painfully of an infection is thanks to Dr Baz.

I'll keep you updated, but in the meantime, do me a Christmas favour?  I know this tuxie cat was once a pet.  He was dumped by some people who think that it's natural for cats to live wild on the streets.

Please show people who think that way this post.  And remind them that Tuxie got picked up; millions don't.

Adopting cats is for life, not just for kitten-hood.

LIM: That Christmas Spirit

So I'm sitting in the hairdresser, having a hair wash, and being tortured by a Christmas CD featuring a children's choir.  Luckily the hair dryers were going full blast so the sound was muffled.

As I was paying up, I said politely, "So are you going home to Ipoh for your Christmas holidays?" because I was intending to wish my mate a Merry Christmas.

She looked blank and then said, "Oh no!  I'm a freethinker (atheist)!" adding conscientiously, "But I celebrate Chinese New Year."

"I thought with the Christmas music and all that you might celebrate...." I excused myself.

"We are all freethinkers," my mate said waving at her colleagues.  "That music is for clients like you."

"I'm a freethinker too, and I love Chinese New Year," I told her. "But I can't stand children's choirs."

"Me neither," she whispered.

"Hey, I'm a freethinker too!" said the man who was having his hair cut. "And I don't like this music either!"

"Me too!" said the lady next to him.

It dawned on us that none of the 7 people in the shop celebrate Christmas, and that all of us were enduring the music.

"Can we listen to the radio?" the lady customer asked plaintively.

I hope that wherever you're living that everyone is as thoughtful about the importance of various holidays to other communities.  And I really hope that you're not tortured by children's choirs!

Au and Guido: The Inspectors

There are some places where cats should not go: the crockery cupboard is one of them. But Au and Guido saw the door was open, and decided they had to Inspect.

We're counting plates, says Guido.  We're counting plates by stepping on them with our paws.

Now how do we get up there???

I'm happy to report that nothing was broken during the Inspection...

Target Gives Advice

So many of our friends are having a rough time.  Ginger Jasper isn't well, Lucy isn't feeling so hot either, and poor little Emma died last week leaving Herman and Karen Jo broken-hearted.  We're purring for them all.

To cheer us up, we've made a silly joke.

Here's to better news today!

Miko and Mei Mei Go Wild

I went to the bank at 7 o'clock this morning and when I came back, I spotted Miko and Mei Mei aka The Gremlins who live next door running around the street.

They were kicking up their heels, wagging their tails and running around like puppies. Although we live in a dead end street, every neighbour goes to work at that time, so there were cars about.

I couldn't catch Mei Mei but when a car stopped abruptly in front of Miko, I yelled so loudly that Miko lay down.  I scooped him up, and saw that Mei Mei had turned to follow me.

By cunningly telling Miko in a loud voice that I'd give him treats, I got Mei Mei to follow us all the way home.

When I got them both back in their garden safely, their dad came out; he was panic-stricken when he realised what had happened.  Turned out the gate was not completely closed, and the Gremlins had wormed their way out of their garden and onto the street.

What a drama, huh?  But all's well that ends well.

PS Mei Mei is the blonde on the left, and Miko is the dark boy on the right.

Guido In His Box

Guido has taken over the cat carrier that stands on the garden bench.  He's in there for his morning nap, but when you walk past, he says, "Squeak!" and asks us to pet him.

Guido is soooooo cute!

LIM: Speaking In Tongues

So I'm in our local petrol station, saying hello to the lady who's been working there forever.

Whenever I say, "Good morning!" she says, "Selamat pagi!" and when I say, "Selamat pagi!" she says, "Good morning!"

I then continue in English, mainly because when I speak Malay people don't listen because they KNOW white people don't speak it. Also, I have a strong Indonesian accent which further confuses people.

Anyway, the focus on English must have annoyed her because one day this lady says to me, "We always speak English. You have been here a long time. Why don't we speak your mother tongue one day, and mine the next?"

"Cool," says me. "Shall we start in yours?"

"No, let's do yours first," she says.

"Goede morgen," I say. "Hoeveel is het vandaag?"

There's a long silence, and my friend says, "So English isn't your first language?"

Funnily enough she's not up for learning Dutch, but the English focus doesn't upset her anymore, so we're continuing our half-Malay-and-half-English chit-chat.

And she has a lot of fun telling other people that my mother tongue sounds like gargling.

Guido has a new book.  He's reading Fan Goes To Sea by Dawn Farnham.  The story follows the adventures of Fan, a little Chinese boat.  It's available in Malaysia and Singapore. Selling price RM24.50.  A great Christmas present for kids!

Au Furs The Laundry

I put our clean bed sheets on the table, turned my back for a second, and found Au ensconced in the clean cotton. He was grinning and shedding white fur evenly all over the dark blue material.

Note the claw sticking out that says, "Dis is my place and I'm staying!"

We have regular floods in our neighbourhood: a result of construction chucking rubbish in storm drains and bad home design.

When the water started rising, Target became nervous.

Target went upstairs where it's safe but Au decided to check how bad the flood was.

The senior cat decided an inch of water was Too Much, and went upstairs too.  Guido on the other hand decided it was time to paddle.

But when wet paws proved too much, he asked to be lifted onto the sofa so he could dry his feet.

Now we are dry again.  Until the next time.  Which, considering it's monsoon season, is probably at 4PM.

How Guido Was Rescued.. gues post by Alicia from Pet Epicure

Alicia and her family run Pet Epicure, a pet boutique, luxury cat boarding facility, doggie daycare centre and pet grooming shop that also rescues and adopts out ex-stray cats.  As Guido (or Jake as he was known then) came from there, I invited Alicia to tell us how he ended up in her place....

Guido "killing" the living room rug.
I'd like to say I was surprised when Annabelle and Olivia (friend and sister) called to ask if we could take in a solitary emaciated kitten they had found outside the shop, but I wasn't. Whether he was dumped or had crawled over led by inner intuition that help was near, we will never know.

Over the years we have rehomed over 180 cats and kittens and TNRed almost 3 dozen. Keeping our numbers realistic has always been a challenge. Aside from financial constraints, we are constantly walking the fine line between overcrowding and quality care.

Feeling optimistic that day, I said yes, but he would be the last until we rehomed or released some.

Jake was discovered during one of our busiest times; we had too many adults that had spent almost a year with us without finding a family and a bunch of other abandoned kittens. However, the little man seemed to understand our stretched finances and over taxed schedules; he accepted his Accurate calmly and struggled just enough during his bath to hint at his indignation and eventual vigour. He promptly began eating and quickly gained weight, growing a handsome glossy coat and charming the socks off man and beast.

And the rest as they say is history. Sailing under a lucky star, he came to be adopted by a lovely couple who offer him a forever home, love and a fair amount of roast chicken. What else can a cat ask for?

If you want to adopt a pet, or happen to have tonnes of spare cash to give away, do consider calling Pet Epicure or check their Facebook page.

It's Our 789th Post!

It's our 789th post and we're celebrating!

Au is tearing up newspapers and making his own cat confetti. It's his favourite game and requires T-man to touch his tail so that Au can rev up the meows.

Guido is lying about looking furry cute.  He's a talkative kitty, and the first person we've known in ages to say, "Meow" like a cartoon cat.  Target still says meep and Au has a foghorn MAUUUUUUUU!

Target is totally flumped.  He was up all night cleaning his face, rubbing his whiskers and sliding down the pillow and giving me furry purry headbutts to tell me how much he loves me. It's sweet but I would like a bit more sleep tonight.

Anyway, we had a look at our stats and we're proud to say that we get over 7800 hits per month, with about half of our visitors from Malaysia, and the others divided between North America and Western Europe.

Our most popular post overall is 24 Signs You're Living Under The Velvet Paw and our most popular post this month was our free ebook Katz Tales: How Boris The Cat Was Reunited With His Family

Thanks for all of your visits and comments; we love being part of the cat blogosphere!

Target: Why Am I Yawning?

Why am I yawning?  Well it's like this...

Last night T-man was roaring like a tiger.  Guido and I were sleepy but mummy-cat was muttering some furry bad words, and then upsetting me by trying to hide under my pillows.

At about midnight she got up and went to the other bedroom. This meant I had to check on her at 1AM, and again at 4AM.  Guido was furry nice and he helped by checking up on her at 3AM and Au checked her at 5AM.

Checking isn't easy because it means rubbing noses, giving her furry purry headbutts, and stepping over every inch of her to check the blanket is wrapped round nice and tight.

So I'm furry tired today.

I think Mummy cat has noticed because she says she'll keep the door shut next time.  I think it's a good idea.  If the door is shut, she can't go to the other room and then we cats won't have to keep checking on her.

We cats need our sleep you know.
